  • INDIA: TEXTILE MANUFACTURER'S EMPLOYEE'S GIVEN ROLLER SKATES

Hindi/Nat The demand for textiles from India is growing day by day. So too is the notion of time is money. Spinning factory employees are literally at work round the clock trying to keep up with the orders. One enterprising manufacturer has reduced the workload of his workers with a novel idea - giving them all roller skates. Workers begin to arrive for the early shift at one of Nalagarh's many factories. Many of them are wearing their first pair of shoes. Inside - they top off their uniforms with a new addition - roller skates - definitely a first for all of them. This certainly isn't Xanadu - but the roller skates are making work at this spinning factory a little step closer to paradise. The work area they have to cover is huge - about 200 square metres per employee. Running from machine to machine in case of breaks in the yarn can be exhausting - but not when you are wearing roller skates - even if they do take some getting used to. SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) "I'd never even seen or heard of roller skates before. When I first saw them - I wondered what they were and I thought they were strange. But now - I like wearing them." SUPERCAPTION: Rakesh Shah, employee Each day the workers put in an eight hour shift - hard work on foot considering they cover about eight kilometres. They move around dozens of spindles - also on wheels. When one of these spinning lines breaks - employees have to get there - and fast. Each minute it takes to fix a snapped piece of yarn costs the company just over a rupee. The carriers and the sweepers are always kept busy. It may not sound like a lot - but altogether - these free-wheeling employees are saving their boss some 500-thousand rupees (just over U-S 13-thousand dollars (d) a day.) While the enhanced production is great - the company's President - Y C Gupta - says he had both the factory's and his employees' interests in mind when he implemented the programme nine months ago. SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) "An average worker here covers 8 kilometres in 8 hours. In roller skates - with a slight push - he can get around faster - it reduces fatigue and it makes the factory more efficient." SUPERCAPTION: Y C Gupta, President Gontermann-Peipers Ltd Putting all these workers on to their own wheels took a lot more effort than buying skates. A special friction-free floor was laid when the factory was built. And all of them need training. Each day one of India's champion roller skaters oversees lessons - to make sure there are no broken bones on the way to fixing broken threads. At first - says trainer Sanjeev Datta - it was a rough ride - but now - many employees have new aspirations - to become a champion skater. SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) "The workers who don't wear skates have approached me and asked me to get their job changed so they can skate, too. Some of my students are so enthusiastic that I have to catch them and tell them to slow down." SUPERCAPTION: Sanjeev Datta, Indian Roller Hockey Captain/Trainer) Employees are cautioned to slow down - often. The company's next investment may have to be speed limit signs. However - with the skating staffers already moving in the fast lane towards maximum production - this factory may soon also be producing some of the country's finest skaters. Weaving is the most basic process in which two different sets of yarns or threads are interlaced with each other to form a fabric or cloth. One of these sets is called warp which is the lengthwise yarn running from the back to the front of the loom. The other set of crosswise yarns are the filling which are called the weft or the woof. The warps form the basic structure of fabrics. As such, they are made to pass through many operations before actual weaving is done. These Spool Racksoperations include spooling, warping and slashing. In spooling, the yarn is wound on larger spools, or cones, that are placed on a rack known as creel. From the creel, the yarns are wound on a warp beam, which looks like a huge spool. These lengths of hundreds of warped yarns lie parallel to one another. These yarns are unwound for slashing, or sizing. The yarn is coated with sizing with the help of slasher machine. Slashing prevents chafing or breaking of yarns during weaving process. Sizing is either starch based or a synthetic like polyvinyl alcohol or a water soluble acrylic polymers. The sized yarns are then wound on a final warp beam and are ready for the loom. The filling yarns experience less strain during the weaving process. Their preparation includes spinning them to the required size and giving them just the right amount of twist desired for the kind of fabric they will be used. No matter what type of weaving is being done, four major operations are performed in sequence and are continuously repeated.
